NEETS

Nearly one in five UK 16 and 17-year-olds in England are 'Neets' - those neither in employment, education or training.

The number of young people in England not engaged in any productive activity went up in recent years, figures show to 850,000! (UK population is 60 million).

The numbers of those aged 16 to 24 who were not in employment, education or training rose by 94,000 from 2003-07. (And these were figures before the current recession).

Beat the recession

Here are just a few strategies to save some money.
Please contribute if you have any other brilliant ideas to beat the recession.

1. Use Energy Saving Bulbs (CFLs).
It saves electricity in the long run, even though they are 3 times more expensive than an average bulb.
CFLs last up to 15 times longer than the average bulb and can save you up to 20% on lighting bills.

2. Turning down (or up if you are using air conditioning) your thermostat by just 1°C can cut the cost by as much as 10%.

3. Buy electrical appliances with good energy ratings.

4. Trivial things matters.
Not filling the kettle- only boil enough for the number of hot drinks you are making.

5. Install dimmer switches in your home.

6. At night, if possible don't leave lamps and lights on.
Use a simple nightlight.

7. Turn off all standby lights on televisions, hi-fis, computers.
Turn off your phone charger – equipment on standby uses up to 20% of the energy it would use when fully on.
And it protects your battery.

8. Use a timer for your appliances eg (Air cond and other appliances)

9. Cut down on your morning latte at Starbucks.
Buy a kettle or coffee maker.

10. Make your own lunch– eating out seems easy but is heavy on the pocket.

11. Never shop on an empty stomach.
Have you ever gone to a Night Market (Pasar Malam) on an empty stomach?
Laugh if you like, but shopping while hungry increases your chances of impulsive and excessive buys which will most likely end up abandoned or thrown out.
And it will surely make you consume more calories!!

12. Buy reduce to clear items.
A lot of fresh foods are cut by 30% to 70% as their expiry date draws near
But be sure you are going to eat the food quickly, or freeze it.

13. Buy in bulk. It saves money. But beware of items with a short shelf life.

14. Grow your own.
Only if you have spare time and a garden.
Plant vegetables/fruits that are easy to grow and can be harvested fast.

15. Charity shops and discount retailers offer great value for money.

16. Boycott the rip-off stores that sells overpriced items.

17. Choose the best mobiles phone option for you.
Pay-as-you-go is the first step to saving money on your mobile.
More often than not, pay-as-you-go ends up to be the cheaper option for the average user.
It can be difficult to keep tabs on a bill phone, and extra charges such as line rental are often incurred..

18. Trade in your old mobile. Don't throw it away.

19. International calls or outstation calls? Use Skype.

20. For holidays, book well in advance.
This applies esp for budget airlines.

21. Buy on eBay. Many good deals are available.

22. Cancel your gym membership.
The chances are, for the majority of us, we don't go every day.

23. Quit smoking.
This is the best time to do it.

24. Quit alcohol.
Again a best time to do it.

25. Car pool if feasible.

26. Buy a petrol saving car if it is not possible to use public transport/cycling.

27. Brake the right way.
A car consumes most petrol as it accelerates.
So if you're stuck in heavy traffic and continue to accelerate and brake you're wasting an unnecessary amount of fuel.
Anticipate the speed of the traffic ahead and try to keep a smooth momentum.

28. When you drive, shift into a higher gear as soon as possible. For petrol cars, shift up in gear before 2,500 revolutions per minute (rpm) and for diesel cars before 2,000 rpm.

29. Driving between 65 and 80kmph, where safe, will reduce petrol consumption and emission compared to higher speeds (as it is most fuel efficient at that speed).

30. Reducing the amount of weight in your car will save you on fuel.
So put away your golf clubs when you don't need them.

31. Close the windows and use the vents instead.
Leaving your front window half open increases your fuel consumption by 5% at 80kmph or 10% if you are driving at 110kmph.

32. Keep your tyres correctly inflated and improve your fuel efficiency by 3%.

33. Get rid of your Sky box or Astro.
Removing this will save you a substantial amount.
And you can use the time for more quality activities.

34. Use a debit card.

35. Cancel your credit card.
It you can't, either reduce the credit allowance.
Also, cancel your extra credit cards.
Some people I know have 4-5 credit cards!

36. Go on a diet.
This is the best time to do it.

37. Read news on-line and save the cost of your daily newspaper.

Predictions of consequences of global warming is becoming true

It has been predicted years ago that the epicenter of the effects of global warming would be felt in Europe.

How true..

There was no summer last year in UK.

Weather in Europe is in its all time low this winter since decades.

Storms hitting Europe has been extremely ferocious.

Waves in the seas were as high as 20 meters.

Yesterday, fierce storms across France and Spain have killed at least 12 people.

Four children died when the roof of a sports centre in Catalonia collapsed and at least a million homes in France are without power because of high winds, gusting at up to 172km/h (107mph).

Malaysia Not In Recession Now, Says PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is not facing a recession now despite the global financial meltdown that has badly hit the United States and Europe, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Friday.

"We are not in recession now," he said.

"We are not having too much problem in the fourth quarter. Even the growth at two percent in the quarter, it would give us an average of more than five percent," he told reporters after opening the permanent secretariat of the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Foundation.

"Definitely more than five percent," Abdullah said in responding to comments from former finance minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah that the Malaysian economy was bad.

"I don't think that's right. Maybe he doesn't have all the information that we have. If it is really that bad, we would have be in recession by now," he said.

Web Bot Predictions 2009

What is Web bot?
Have you heard of it before?
Have you heard about the 2012 theory?

If not, then read on....

Since its conception in the late 1990’s, the Web Bot Project has made a number of very accurate and insightful predictions regarding coming events. Originally designed to track stock market trends, the Web Bot uses a system of spiders that crawl the Internet looking for patterns of behavior, trends and chatter pertaining to coming events. This tool is believed to be able to forecast the future by tapping into the collective unconscious of society.

One of the first accurate predictions from the Web Bot program took place in June of 2001. The program predicted that a life-altering event would take place within the next 60-90 days. An occurrence of such proportion that it's effects would be felt worldwide. The program based its prediction on "web chatter" and regrettably, the prediction proved accurate when the Twin Towers fell on 9/11/2001.

Throughout its short existence, the Web Bot has accurately predicted many other natural and man made disasters such as the 2001 anthrax attack on Washington DC, the East Coast power outage in 2003 and the earthquake which lead to the December 26 2004 tsunami. It is even credited with predicting hurricane Katrina and the devastating events that followed. In addition, the Web Bot has foretold of a global devastating event expected to take place in late December 2012.

Even more remarkable is a series of predictions made back in late 2006 about the coming events of late 2008 through mid 2009. Although these predictions may or may not pan out to be completely accurate, it is interesting to evaluate each one based on its own merit and relationship to the times in which we live. The following is a breakdown of these predictions.

- October 7 2008 to February 19 2009 will be filled with emotional intensity
The Web Bot has never picked up any event lasting this long. In comparison, the events of 9/11 lasted about 10 days. This event will be four months of high emotion.

- In October Global emotional release event begins – largely economic.
The rest of the world will begin to seriously question the stability and reliability of the U.S. dollar.

What is 2009 going to be?

- There will be a 2009 winter/spring natural disaster, which caused people to become angry about government response.
With the dramatic increase in natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and more, the government’s inability to respond to the immediate needs of the people will prove to be devastating for many.

- The Web Bot foresee that the winter in the Northeast will be very cold, causing some schools to close, and then later to reopen as shelters for people who can't heat their homes.
Language suggests that the shortages will be caused by a lack of supplies, cost of fuel, or both.

- Global Coastal Event likely in early to mid 2009
The Web Bot sees a permanent loss of low-lying territory globally and foresees that one continent in particular will get hit badly, but it does not say which one. Places to avoid: anything at sea level (Bangladesh/Florida/ etc).

Prepare yourself for what is coming. The Web Bot tells us that for the remainder of 2009, bad will only get worse.

Minum !!!!

Went to medical records first thing in the morning (at 9am).

In order to get access to patient's medical records, you need permission from the higher authorities.

Only 4 people in the hospital can give the authority.

3 pergi kursus

1 pergi minum

Sounds familiar?

Kept visiting the place every hour and the person in charge only came back at 12.30pm!

3.5 hours of tea time.

And we are talking about a world class hospital here!!!!

After getting approval, you go into medical records and they tell you to find your own files!!!

And you can't bring the files out of the room.

And there is no place for you to sit!!!

Sat on a stool for 4 solid hours and reading the patient's tickets and taking down relevant data on my lap.

What a shit....

Britain loses faith in economy

Global poll shows UK least likely to trust politicians, banks or markets

* Julian Glover
* The Guardian, Wednesday 14 January 2009

British economic confidence has been shattered by the financial crisis, according to a unique international poll published today. It shows that people here are now less likely to trust banks, the stockmarket or the government's economic management than people in comparable nations.

On most measures, British people emerged as among the most pessimistic of the 14,555 people questioned around the world.

Remarkably, confidence in the banking system appears lower in Britain - 4.2 out of 10 - than in bankrupt Iceland, which polled 4.6.

While around a third of citizens in developing economies such as India and China say the economic situation in their countries could improve in coming months, more than three-quarters of people in Britain expect it to worsen.

But Britain is the world largest wine importer in the world!
UK-'boleh'

Cheer up: at least we're buying more wine than anyone else

* Stephen Bates
* The Guardian, Wednesday 14 January 2009

Amid falling high street sales and crumbling retailers, one sector believes it is bucking the trend. The wine industry is predicting that sales in Britain will continue to grow over the next five years, despite the recession.

Britain has become the world's largest wine importer, topping 1.6 billion bottles, overtaking Germany and the US, and 12.4% higher than in 2003. Britons spent £3.3bn on wine in 2007.

MIGRANT SCANDAL - BRITONS FEEL NEGLECTED AND BETRAYED

UK NEWS

Saturday January 3,2009
By Alison Little

BRITAIN’S white working class feels it has been “betrayed” and “abandoned” in favour of immigrants, a Government report has revealed.

Poor white people living on some of the country’s most deprived estates believe they are the biggest victims of a decade of mass immigration, according to the study.

Critics say the report proves that Labour’s failure to heed warnings about the impact of its uncontrolled immigration policy has created growing resentment and community tensions.

Many people believe immigrants are better treated in terms of housing, benefits and jobs and now fear that their territory and “national culture” are under threat.

But they also feel unable to complain for fear of being branded racist.
“The danger for the rest of us is that this has now created a ticking time bomb of racial and class prejudice.”

Eighty per cent of the public want to see a substantial reduction in immigration but the Government refuses to address the issue.

“The root is the massive level of immigration that the Government has not only permitted but encouraged. The working class has been the most affected but it has been silenced by the forces of political correctness.

“The remedy is in the Government’s hands. It must cut immigration very sharply.”

Researchers interviewed people on estates in Birmingham, Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, Thetford in Norfolk and Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire.

Although some voiced sympathy for asylum seekers and immigrants doing unpleasant jobs, there was a widespread perception that immigrants were competing with them for public resources.

The 107-year-old virgin who was afraid to marry starts her search for Mr Right, Daily Mail Online

Miss Wang Guiying decided to look for a mate because she was worried she was becoming a burden to her nieces and nephews - the youngest is 60.

'My problem is that I can't get about like I used to,' Miss Guiying said.

'I broke my leg when I was 102 and I had to stop doing the chores like washing my clothes.

'I'm 107 and I'm still not married. What will happen if I don't hurry up and find a husband?'

So she's made herself 'available' - and local officials have answered her call for help in finding a husband.

Her family and a government search party have been primed to scour old folks' homes to look for likely candidates.

'She believes that somewhere out there is a Mr Right,' said an official.

Effects of fast food on children, PEDIATRICS Vol. 113 No. 1 January 2004, pp. 112-118

Children who ate fast food, compared with those who did not, consumed
more total energy (187 kcal; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 109–265),
more energy per gram of food (0.29 kcal/g; 95% CI: 0.25–0.33),
more total fat (9 g; 95% CI: 5.0–13.0),
more total carbohydrate (24 g; 95% CI: 12.6–35.4),
more added sugars (26 g; 95% CI: 18.2–34.6),
more sugar-sweetened beverages (228 g; 95% CI: 184–272),
less fiber (–1.1 g; 95% CI: –1.8 to –0.4),
less milk (–65 g; 95% CI: –95 to –30), and
fewer fruits and nonstarchy vegetables (–45 g; 95% CI: -58.6 to –31.4).

Very similar results were observed by using within-subject analyses in which subjects served as their own controls: that is, children ate more total energy and had poorer diet quality on days with, compared with without, fast food.

It was a very disturbing day for me while eating in the hospital's food court.

Firstly there isn't any shops selling decent and healthy food. The restaurants in a world renowned hospitals are as follows:-

Burger king- usually attracts the highest number of people
Upper crust- serves baguettes and other snacks
Trattoria- serves pizza
Jacket junction- serves jacket potatoes with sinful toppings (only few choices are available- Cheese and macaroni, beans and sausage, tuna and mayonnaise, cheese and bacon)
Cafe ritazza- fish and chips, briyani rice, pasta +/- nooddles

As you see there is hardly any healthy food available.
And the healthier of the lot are the more expensive ones.

I bring my own food for lunch (usu bread +/- eggs +/- lettuce) as I couldn't afford to eat in the hospital anyway (burger king meal cost roughly 6 pounds). My own lunch would cost no more than 1 pound.

Water?- there's free drinking water available (and the tap water is pretty safe I suppose)

What pissed me off today?

1. Babies eating fast food (I saw one just above 6 months eating fried chicken nuggets and chips).

2. Pregnant mums eating fast food.

3. Patients eating fast food.
Saw one chinaman with probably liver cirrhosis or CCF (oedematous lower limb) eating burger and chips and coke with a branulla sticking out (most likely for his IV Lasix).
Saw my pt day 10 post transplant (ESRD d/t Type 1 DM) having burger and chips. Ok, you could argue that Type 1 DM is not his fault and he had a combined kidney and pancreas transplant.

I know we see this in Malaysia as well but not all at once!

It just going to get worse with the worsening economy.

What is it like to buy a house in UK at the moment?

We know the house price has dropped by 20-30% in 2008. So is it the best opportunity to buy a house now?

The monthly repayments on your prospective home loan have been slashed dramatically in the past few months.

But whether or not you will benefit will depend on whether you have managed to get a loan at all - and that now means saving to put down a very large deposit.

In fact, 60% of all deals now require a deposit of at least 25%.

And 25% of all deals, those with the most attractive interest rates, now require a massive 40% down payment.

If you do not have that sort of cash to hand, you will simply not be given a loan, as lenders ration their scarce funds and protect themselves against potential losses due to the continued slump in house prices.

This is in response to the rate cuts made today.
The Bank of England cuts rates to 1.5%, the lowest level in its 315-year history, as it continues efforts to help the economy.

Most Expensive Haircut Ever

Went to the least glamorous looking barber shop named 'Barber Shop' in The Broadway, Mill Road! (Jalan Ipoh KL equivalent! despite it sounding posh)

Barber was a 70y/o guy who was friendly but I was worried if his hand was steady enough to cut my hair.

It was only a 20minute experience.

Plain haircut.

No Kung-Fu massage at the end (Not like those Indian barbers in Malaysia where they will give you their Karate chops and try to dislocate your neck).

The bill was 14.75 pounds. (The odd figure was probably the VAT of 15%).

The last haircut I had in UK was in Edinburgh and was only 6 pounds (back in 2003).

P/S: As expected my side-burns were 'senget' and had to go back into the OT for a re-laparotomy.

(apparently the standard hair cut in cambridge at that area is about 12-15 pounds).

Want to survive the credit crunch in UK? Be a Barber......
(He actually said that the barber business is 'credit crunch' proof!)

Crispy pandan pinenuts chocolate cookies

The picture of the cookies were taken from a food blog.
No recipe given.
But looks good.
Can't do it here in UK as oven in house is no good. (And no pandan leaves in Cambridge!. Temperature was -8 degrees celcius yesterday night)
Please try it out and let me know the results.

Here's my recipe-

Ingredients:

250 gm. Butter
10-15 stalks of pandan leaves- Add about 30mls of water and blend them together. Obtain the pandan juice.

75 gm. castor sugar
75 gm. brown sugar
1 egg (medium size)
350 gm. plain flour
1 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
200 gm. chocolate chips
100 gm. pinenuts (or any nuts you prefer i.e. sunflower, macadamia, walnut, almond, pistachios etc. Roast them a little to bring out the fragrance and flavour)

Method:

(1) Beat butter, pandan juice, sugar and egg with electric mixer until smooth.
(2) Add in flour and bicarbonate of soda and stir in chocolate chips and pinenuts.
(3) Put a 1 tablespoon amount of mixture onto pre-greased trays and bake at 180C for 15 mins. or till golden brown (Oven would be with both top and bottom heating on).
(4) Cool on wire rack before storing in cookie containers.

It should produce crispy cookies.

The oven temperature's effects might differ from each oven to another. Please watch the cookies while baking initially to get the appropriate oven settings for your own oven.
